Overview

OSRS 1–99 Melee Training (Attack, Strength, Defence) — What to Prioritize

This guide breaks down an efficient, low-stress route for training melee from level 1 to 99 in Old School RuneScape. You’ll learn a practical stat-training order, early quests that skip the slowest levels, and a clear leveling path that moves from basic monsters to AFK crabs, then into strong mid-game options like Scurrius and sulphur naguas.

When people say “melee,” they usually mean Attack, Strength, and Defence. Attack improves accuracy and unlocks better weapons. Strength increases max hit, which is your biggest driver of damage and experience. Defence doesn’t increase damage directly, but it reduces incoming damage and unlocks important armor and helmets.

Recommended stat order while leveling

A simple approach that works well early is to rotate every 10 levels:

  • Train Attack to 10
  • Train Strength to 10
  • Train Defence to 10
  • Repeat in 10-level blocks (20/20/20, 30/30/30, etc.)

Once you reach key unlocks, you can let Defence lag a bit if you want faster damage progression. Notable breakpoints:

  • 45 Defence: access to stronger mid-game melee helms (after Fremennik Trials for the berserker helm).
  • 55 Defence: helm of neitiznot (after Fremennik Isles), a long-lasting upgrade.
  • 75 Attack: most staple melee training weapons are unlocked, making it reasonable to push Strength hard afterward.

Also note: when this guide says “train 20 to 60,” it means each of Attack, Strength, and Defence to that range—not your combat level.

Melee Gear Basics (What Matters Most for XP)

While bosses can have specific weaknesses (stab, slash, crush), most general training is about using a fast weapon and stacking damage bonuses. For the majority of early and mid-game training, a 4-tick scimitar progression is the classic route.

Weapon progression (simple and effective)

  • Bronze/iron/steel scimitar early on
  • Mithril scimitar at 20 Attack
  • Adamant scimitar at 30 Attack
  • Rune scimitar at 40 Attack
  • At 55 Attack, consider strong double-hitting options like sulphur blades (and equivalent variants for different styles)

For most training, prioritize the weapon upgrade first. Armor upgrades matter less for XP unless you’re taking meaningful damage.

Key “cheap power” upgrades

  • Amulet of strength early (or accuracy-focused amulets if you’re missing often)
  • Climbing boots and later rune/dragon boots
  • Combat bracelet as a straightforward mid-game boost
  • Barrows gloves as a major milestone once you can complete Recipe for Disaster
  • Warrior’s ring (imbued) or berserker ring (imbued) depending on budget and goals

As you get into higher levels, stronger training sets become relevant, including obsidian gear with berserker necklace, blood moon armor with dual macuahuitl, and eventually Dharok’s as a niche high-level option.

Quest XP That Skips the Slow Levels

If you want the fastest start, do a few quests that give large melee experience rewards. These are especially valuable because early melee levels are slow and weapon accuracy is poor.

Waterfall Quest

Waterfall Quest has no requirements and provides 13,750 Attack XP and 13,750 Strength XP, which can jump you to around level 30 in both stats. If you’re brand new, consider getting a few Hitpoints levels first and bring food so you’re not punished by early mistakes.

The Grand Tree

The Grand Tree provides a large chunk of Attack experience (commonly used to push Attack well beyond early weapon tiers when combined with Waterfall Quest).

Holy Grail

Holy Grail is a strong Defence boost and also provides Prayer experience, helping you reach useful early Prayer thresholds without dedicated altar grinding.

Dragon Slayer I

Dragon Slayer I gives Strength and Defence experience and is doable earlier than many players expect (Elvarg can be handled with magic if your melee setup is weak). It’s longer than the other options, but it’s a meaningful jump if you want to accelerate the mid-game.

Leveling Path: 1–99 Melee Training Locations

Levels 1–10: Chickens

At level 1 your DPS is low, so pick something with tiny Defence and low damage. Chickens are ideal. Use basic armor and an iron scimitar, and bring a better scimitar to equip as soon as you unlock it.

  • Focus: quick early levels and basic drops
  • Tip: swap weapons immediately on Attack level-ups for smoother accuracy

Levels 10–20: Cows

Cows are still easy, give better experience than chickens, and are conveniently located near Lumbridge. You can train here until your hits feel consistent and you’re ready for AFK-style training.

Levels 20–40: Sand Crabs

Sand crabs are a classic low-effort training method. They have a max hit of 1, so once you have a little Defence you can train with minimal food. Upgrade your scimitar as your Attack level increases.

  • Bring: mithril/adamant/rune scimitar as appropriate, strength amulet, climbing boots
  • Tip: crab aggression expires after about 10 minutes; run away briefly and return to reset aggro

Levels 40–55: Ammonite Crabs (Fossil Island)

Ammonite crabs have higher Hitpoints than sand crabs, so they’re generally better experience while staying low-risk. They’re on Fossil Island, which requires Bone Voyage.

  • Suggested setup: rune scimitar, strength bonus gear, and any easy offensive upgrades
  • Optional upgrades: berserker helm at 45 Defence (after Fremennik Trials)

Levels 55+: Gemstone Crab (Very AFK)

From level 55 onward, the gemstone crab is a strong “default” choice for AFK melee. It effectively offers extremely long engagement time and minimal danger (still max hit of 1), making it excellent for multitasking.

One important detail: you get slightly less experience per damage dealt here than at many other monsters. That’s why sand/ammonite crabs can feel better earlier, and why the gemstone crab shines most once your stats and gear are stronger.

Gear checkpoints for gemstone crab training

  • ~55 stats: double-hitting weapon option at 55 Attack, berserker helm (or upgrade later), rune plate/legs, combat bracelet, climbing boots, imbued ring if available
  • ~60 stats: obsidian armor + berserker necklace + obsidian weapon can be very strong for pure training
  • ~75 Attack/Strength: blood moon armor + dual macuahuitl becomes a top-tier XP setup for many players
  • High levels: Dharok’s can compete only when your stats and Hitpoints are very high and you’re leveraging the set effect correctly

Getting there and keeping it efficient

Once you have access, use the local transport options and move between the crab’s possible locations if it isn’t at your current spot. When your stats are decent, consider using super attack and super strength potions to push noticeably higher XP per hour.

Expect XP to scale heavily with stats and gear. Early on you might see roughly 40–45k XP/hour; later, strong setups can climb toward or beyond 100k XP/hour while remaining extremely low effort.

Mid-Game Boss XP: Scurrius (Great for Learning PvM)

At around 60 Attack/Strength/Defence, Scurrius becomes a valuable training option. It’s designed as an introductory boss: good combat experience, real mechanics practice, and a unique weapon upgrade that dramatically improves kill speed.

Bone mace and why it matters

Scurrius can drop the Scurrius spine. Combining it with a rune mace (via Smithing or by paying an NPC fee) creates the bone mace (50 Attack required). This weapon is extremely effective in the Scurrius encounter because it gains special benefits versus rats and clears the spawned rat minions quickly, which improves both safety and XP.

Practical gearing for Scurrius

  • Weapon: rune scimitar early, then upgrade; bone mace once obtained
  • Amulet: glory for balanced stats; fury if you can afford it
  • Cape: fire cape if you have it; otherwise any reasonable alternative
  • Shield slot: work toward a dragon defender once you can access the Warriors’ Guild requirements
  • Hands: barrows gloves are an excellent mid-game goal

XP rates vary with skill and gear. Early learning kills are slower (that’s normal). Once comfortable and using the bone mace, rates can improve significantly and remain competitive even as your levels rise.

High-Value Training Alternative: Sulphur Naguas (Moons of Peril)

Another excellent method around 60 Attack/Strength is fighting sulphur naguas in the Ancient Prison area tied to the Moons of Peril content. This method stands out because it can deliver strong XP rates and has built-in support for sustain and boosting.

Why sulphur naguas are so good for melee XP

  • Convenient boosting and sustain: the area supports making moonlight-style potions for restoring Prayer and boosting combat, reducing ongoing potion costs.
  • Flat armor interaction: their mechanics effectively add extra damage to successful hits, which strongly rewards fast, multi-hit weapons.
  • Weakness to crush: crush-focused double-hit options can outperform slash-focused choices here.

Requirements and setup notes

  • Access: requires the relevant Moons of Peril quest completion to enter the dungeon area
  • Slayer: requires 48 Slayer to fight them
  • Best early weapon style: double-hitting options, especially those aligned with crush
  • High-end setup: blood moon armor with dual macuahuitl can be exceptionally strong

A simple way to run this spot is to position yourself between multiple spawn points, enable Protect from Melee, turn on your best offensive prayer, set auto-retaliate, and let the spawns come to you. Compared to gemstone crab, this can feel faster because you’re not penalized by reduced XP per damage and because the nagua mechanics reward multi-hit weapons.

If you also bring an ectoplasmator (from Soul Wars), you can gain extra Prayer experience per kill, which is a nice passive bonus while training melee.

When to Add Slayer Into Your Melee Training

Slayer is one of the best “two-for-one” progress paths in OSRS: you gain combat experience while also leveling a skill that unlocks profitable monsters and future upgrades. Many players start taking Slayer seriously once their melee stats are around the 60s, but you can begin earlier if you prefer structured tasks over stationary grinding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I train Attack or Strength first for faster leveling?

Early on, alternating in 10-level blocks works well because Attack improves accuracy and unlocks weapon tiers, while Strength increases max hit. Once you have key weapon unlocks (around 75 Attack), pushing Strength higher often feels best for XP.

Are crabs still worth it if I want something more engaging?

Yes for AFK time, especially ammonite and gemstone crabs. If you want more interaction and better practice, Scurrius is a strong step up without being overwhelming.

When is the obsidian set better than other options?

Around the 60s, obsidian armor plus berserker necklace can be very efficient for pure training. Later, blood moon armor with dual macuahuitl typically overtakes it for raw melee XP.

Is the bone mace only useful at Scurrius?

It’s primarily valuable there because of its rat-focused benefits and how it handles the minions. Outside that encounter, standard training weapons usually make more sense.

Do I need high Defence to start sulphur naguas?

You don’t need extremely high Defence, but having solid mid-game stats and using Protect from Melee makes the method smoother. The 48 Slayer requirement is often the bigger gate than Defence.
