Grasping Mail is an unusual rare body armour in Path of Exile 2, combining conventional armour modifiers with options associated with rings and the Genesis Tree. How to Obtain Grasping Mail

The acquisition process begins with Breach progression at the Monastery of the Keepers, south of the Ziggurat Refuge. Speak to Alith and advance the associated quest line until the relevant Breach Atlas passive becomes available.

That progression enables a particular Breach encounter to provide the head needed for the Genesis Tree unlock. Bringing the head to the tree unlocks the Grasping Orchid, where the armour can be created.

• Unlock the passive associated with the required encounter in stabilized Breaches.
• Obtain the required head and bring it to the Genesis Tree.
• Unlock the Grasping Orchid.
• Sacrifice 60 Breach rings to receive an unidentified rare Grasping Mail.

The ring requirement makes each new base a meaningful commitment. Decide whether another sacrifice is necessary before spending rings: an existing armour can be modified with crafting currency, so a poor initial identification does not automatically mean starting over.

Does the Type of Breach Ring Matter?

The sacrifice accepts a mixture of the eight Breach ring types. Using 60 rings of one type is not required; different types can be combined to meet the total.

Available testing does not establish that ring type influences the resulting modifiers. There is therefore no demonstrated reason to pay extra for a particular type solely to target a specific armour affix. Treat ring item level as the more relevant selection factor.

Choosing Ring Item Levels

The resulting armour's item level does not appear to follow a simple average, nor does the lowest-level ring necessarily determine it. Higher-level rings appear to have a strong influence, but the exact formula is not confirmed.

Observed combinations illustrate the distinction:

• 59 rings at item level 75 or below, combined with one item level 80 ring, produced an item level 79 armour.
• 59 item level 82 rings and one item level 65 ring produced an item level 82 armour.
• A mixture largely between item levels 79 and 81, with roughly four or five item level 82 rings, also produced an item level 82 armour.

These results support using a small group of high-level rings alongside lower-level material. They do not prove that a particular mixture guarantees the highest possible result.

Practical Rules for a Sacrifice

If the target is item level 82, include rings at that level. An armour above the highest sacrificed ring level should not be expected. Conversely, when deliberately targeting item level 80 or 81, avoid adding higher-level rings that could push the result beyond that target.

For a budget-conscious attempt, several rings at the desired maximum level may be enough to produce the intended base. For expensive crafting plans, account for the uncertainty rather than treating a handful of high-level rings as a guaranteed recipe.

This matters when managing Path of Exile 2 currency: saving resources on the sacrifice is useful only if the resulting item still supports the craft you intend to pursue.

The armour draws from three modifier categories: standard body armour modifiers, ring modifiers, and Genesis Tree modifiers. This creates combinations that ordinary body armour cannot necessarily offer.

Why Targeting One Exceptional Modifier Is Expensive

A large modifier pool also creates a problem: every desired result competes with many alternatives. The exact weightings of the Genesis Tree modifiers are not established here, so precise odds or expected crafting costs would be misleading.

Additional spell levels are an especially ambitious target. Do not assume that repeated Chaos Orb use will produce the desired affix within a manageable budget. Extensive crafting can still fail to yield it.

Less restrictive goals are easier to evaluate. Increased spell damage, suitable attack damage, or a useful defensive combination may already make the item valuable to a particular build. Decide which outcomes are acceptable before spending heavily.

A Sensible Crafting Plan

Because Grasping Mail is rare equipment, it can interact with currencies such as Chaos Orbs and Fracturing Orbs. That does not make every crafting operation equally sensible, especially on an item with so many possible modifiers.

• Define the build's needs: identify the offensive affixes and defensive layers that actually improve the character.
• Choose a suitable item level: avoid committing resources to a base that does not fit the intended modifier targets.
• Set a spending limit: establish how much can be lost without delaying essential upgrades.
• Recognize useful intermediate results: a functional armour may be preferable to continuing toward an exceptionally rare ideal.
• Plan the defensive transformation: decide whether rune forging supports the build before investing in final quality.

For higher-value purchases, compare the cost of a finished item against the uncertainty of crafting. PoE 2 Divine Orbs committed to a speculative project are resources unavailable for more predictable improvements elsewhere.

Armour Quality and Breach Catalyst Quality

The unmodified base has armour, evasion, and energy shield. Like other body armour, it can receive conventional quality through Armourer's Scraps, and its defensive modifiers can improve those values.

It also accepts Breach catalysts, despite being a body armour rather than jewellery. Catalyst quality improves applicable modifiers; it should not be confused with a direct increase to every base defense.

For example, a defense-related catalyst can improve a rolled energy shield modifier without independently raising the base armour and evasion values. The benefit depends on which modifiers qualify for that catalyst.

Using Vaal Infusers

Once the relevant quality reaches 20%, Vaal Infusers can increase quality further. A single application can raise both conventional quality and Breach catalyst quality on this item.

The process carries corruption risk, as it does on other eligible equipment. Consider the item's remaining crafting steps before taking that risk, particularly if additional rune forging is planned.

Rune forging adds Runic Ward and can alter the armour's original defensive layers. The progression has three named stages: Runeforged, Runemastered, and Runefathered.

Not every item can reach the final stage. Eligibility depends on the defensive combination remaining after the earlier transformations, and corrupted or sanctified equipment cannot continue through the process.

First Stage: Runeforged

The first transformation can retain armour, evasion, and energy shield while adding Runic Ward. Alternatively, it can remove one original defense, leaving a hybrid base with two defenses plus ward.

Any of the original two-defense combinations can result. This means the transformation may remove a layer that a build relies on, so even the first step requires a clear understanding of acceptable outcomes.

Second Stage: Runemastered

An eligible Runeforged item can undergo the second transformation whether it retained all three original defenses or became a hybrid.

• Starting with three defenses: the item can retain all three or lose one and become a hybrid.
• Starting with two defenses: it can regain the missing defense, keep its hybrid combination, or lose another layer and become a single-defense base.

A single-defense result comes from one of the defenses already present. An armour-and-evasion hybrid, for example, can become pure armour or pure evasion alongside ward; it does not become pure energy shield through that removal outcome.

Third Stage: Runefathered

The third transformation requires a Runemastered item that still has armour, evasion, and energy shield. A hybrid or single-defense Runemastered base cannot advance further.

The final Runefathered form is a pure Runic Ward base. Reaching it therefore means giving up the original defensive types, not simply adding another layer to them.

Why Stopping Early Can Be Better

A Runemastered item with energy shield and ward may suit an energy shield character better than the final form. Remaining defensive values can become stronger when other defensive layers are removed.

Judge the outcome by the build's needs rather than the stage name. The furthest transformation is not automatically the strongest equipment choice.

Rune forging removes Breach catalyst quality. Finish the intended forging steps before applying expensive catalysts, or their investment will be lost during a later transformation.

Do all 60 Breach rings need to be the same type?

No. Different ring types can be mixed. Testing does not establish a modifier-targeting advantage from using one type exclusively.

Do a few item level 82 rings guarantee an item level 82 armour?
