Overview

Double corrupting awakened support gems can produce valuable level-five upgrades, but the large sale prices hide equally substantial entry costs. Learn how to prepare gems, find the correct temple room, compare outcomes, and judge whether the potential return justifies risking your currency.

This strategy revolves around Awakened Enhance, Awakened Empower, and Awakened Enlighten. The important distinction is between a profitable batch and a dependable farming method: a small number of successful corruptions can carry the entire investment, while an unlucky sequence can consume a considerable budget.

How Awakened Gem Double Corruption Works

The target is a fully leveled, uncorrupted level-four awakened support gem. A successful level increase produces a level-five gem, which can command a substantial premium because these supports provide valuable benefits to demanding builds.

Gem double corruption takes place at the Lapidary Lens in Doryani's Institute, the tier-three gem room in the Temple of Atzoatl. It is not the same device as the item corruption altar in the Locus of Corruption.

The Lens applies two gem corruption outcomes. A level increase is the desired result, but quality changes, unchanged results, and level reductions also affect the final item. Once corrupted, a disappointing gem cannot simply be returned to its original uncorrupted state for another attempt.

For financial planning, separate results into two practical categories:

  • Hits: level-five gems that sell at the premium target price.
  • Non-hits: other results valued at their actual resale prices, rather than treated as worthless.

This distinction matters because a failed attempt still has salvage value. However, salvage value is not profit: selling a gem for 12 Divine Orbs after paying 120 means recovering only a small fraction of the investment.

Preparing Gems Without Overspending

Compare Level-One and Level-Four Prices

Buying fully leveled gems saves preparation time, while buying level-one gems and leveling them can reduce the upfront cost. In the example pricing used below, the difference was approximately five Divine Orbs per gem.

Across 30 gems, that difference represents 150 Divine Orbs. It is meaningful, but it should not be counted as free money. Leveling takes time, equipment, and socket space that could otherwise support another activity.

Check the actual market spread before committing. If the discount is small, purchasing level-four gems may be reasonable. If the spread is large and the character already runs experience-heavy maps, self-leveling becomes more attractive.

Use Quality to Accelerate Leveling

These exceptional support gems use quality to improve their experience gain. Atziri's Disfavour, with its bonus to the quality of socketed support gems, provides a useful weapon-swap leveling option.

A matching socket color can provide an additional quality bonus, and the gem's own quality contributes as well. Under the described setup, reaching 60% effective quality gives 300% increased experience gain. That is an experience modifier, not a promise that every leveling session takes the same amount of time.

A six-socket bow with a socketed-gem quality modifier offers another approach. Pairing it with Maloney's Mechanism provides three additional gem sockets, allowing nine gems to be leveled together rather than six.

The choice is between faster individual leveling and greater simultaneous capacity. Check equipment requirements, available quality bonuses, and your normal mapping routine rather than assuming one setup always wins.

Experience-focused mapping can make preparation less disruptive. Keep leveling gems equipped while running suitable content, but include that preparation in any full-cycle assessment of your Path of Exile currency returns.

Choosing and Running the Right Temple

The essential purchase criterion is an accessible Doryani's Institute. A temple containing the room is not enough if its connections do not provide a route from the entrance.

  • Confirm that the gem room is Doryani's Institute, not a lower-tier version.
  • Inspect the room connections and identify a complete entrance-to-room route.
  • Bring the correct uncorrupted level-four gem.
  • Reach the Lapidary Lens and apply the double corruption.
  • Record the result and reassess its sale value.

An accessible Apex of Atzoatl is optional. It allows an additional boss kill for potential loot, but it is not required to corrupt the gem. Higher-area-level temples can be preferable when optional loot is part of the plan; room access remains the priority for the corruption itself.

Do not pay a large premium for optional features without comparing their likely value with the extra cost and time. A short, direct route to the Lens is particularly useful when processing a batch of expensive gems.

A 30-Gem Cost and Return Example

The following figures illustrate a batch of ten gems from each category. They are example transaction values, not permanent market prices. Recalculate them before spending PoE currency on a similar batch.

Awakened Enhance: Lower Entry Cost

  • Ten level-four gems at 35 Divine Orbs each: 350 total cost.
  • Three level-five results at 200 each: 600 in sales.
  • Seven non-hits at 13 each: 91 in salvage sales.
  • Total proceeds: 691.
  • Profit before temple costs: 341 Divine Orbs.

Each non-hit loses 22 Divine Orbs against its purchase cost. Enhance requires the smallest starting budget in this comparison, but a lower entry price does not automatically mean the best expected return.

Awakened Empower: Larger Stakes

  • Ten level-four gems at 120 Divine Orbs each: 1,200 total cost.
  • Four level-five results at 530 each: 2,120 in sales.
  • Six non-hits at 12 each: 72 in salvage sales.
  • Total proceeds: 2,192.
  • Profit before temple costs: 992 Divine Orbs.

Each non-hit loses 108 Divine Orbs before the temple expense. The successful results produce a strong batch return, but failed attempts quickly become expensive.

Awakened Enlighten: Highest Example Return

  • Ten level-four gems at 125 Divine Orbs each: 1,250 total cost.
  • Four level-five results at 560 each: 2,240 in sales.
  • Six non-hits at 14 each: 84 in salvage sales.
  • Total proceeds: 2,324.
  • Profit before temple costs: 1,074 Divine Orbs.

Each non-hit loses 111 Divine Orbs. Enlighten produces the largest profit in this example, but that ranking depends on purchase prices, successful-result prices, and resale demand.

Combined Batch Accounting

The total gem investment is 2,800 Divine Orbs. Combined proceeds are 5,207, leaving 2,407 before temple expenses. Subtracting approximately 17 Divine Orbs for the temples gives a net result of 2,390 Divine Orbs.

The 19 non-hits account for 1,468 Divine Orbs in losses relative to their purchase costs. Eleven successful upgrades more than offset those losses. This is why looking only at premium gem sales gives a misleading impression of the strategy.

Expected Value Matters More Than One Successful Batch

Eleven hits across 30 attempts is a success rate of approximately 36.7%. That is better than the commonly used one-in-four planning assumption. It should not be treated as the expected outcome of every future batch.

A useful calculation is:

Expected profit per attempt = success probability × hit sale price + failure probability × non-hit sale price − gem purchase cost − temple cost.

Using a 25% success assumption and the example prices, expected returns before temple costs are:

  • Enhance: 0.25 × 200 + 0.75 × 13 − 35 = 24.75 Divine Orbs.
  • Empower: 0.25 × 530 + 0.75 × 12 − 120 = 21.5 Divine Orbs.
  • Enlighten: 0.25 × 560 + 0.75 × 14 − 125 = 25.5 Divine Orbs.

These estimates simplify non-hits into a single resale value. Actual quality and level outcomes can have different prices, so more detailed records improve the model.

For ten attempts in each category, this simplified model gives 717.5 Divine Orbs before temples, substantially below the example batch's realized profit. Positive expected value does not prevent a losing batch, particularly when only a few attempts are affordable.

Why the Hourly Profit Figure Needs Context

At three minutes per temple, 30 runs take 90 minutes. Dividing the example net profit by 1.5 hours produces approximately 1,593 Divine Orbs per hour.

That calculation describes temple execution time. It excludes buying gems, leveling them, sourcing temples, checking routes, listing results, and completing trades. It also reflects an above-assumption success rate.

For a realistic comparison with other activities, measure the whole process. Record acquisition time, preparation time, temple time, and selling time separately. Unsold gems remain inventory, not realized profit.

Keep ordinary gear upgrades and mapping resources separate from the gambling budget. A strategy with attractive averages is still unsuitable if a failed streak would prevent the character from continuing its regular progression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which awakened gem is best to double corrupt?

Compare expected return after purchase costs, temple expenses, and realistic resale prices. The highest level-five sale price alone does not identify the best choice.

Should gems be leveled before corruption?

Yes, this strategy targets uncorrupted level-four gems so that a successful level increase produces level five. Buying them fully leveled trades additional cost for convenience.

Is an open Apex required?

No. An accessible Doryani's Institute is required. The Apex is an optional extension for additional boss loot.

Does a profitable model guarantee profit?

No. Individual attempts and small batches can lose heavily. Budget for unsuccessful streaks rather than assuming the expected number of hits will arrive on schedule.

Can the example profit be repeated reliably?

No fixed return is guaranteed. Market prices, sales speed, temple costs, and random outcomes all change the result, so recalculate before each new investment.
