Overview

Ironwood Trees Woodcutting Method (Sunble Bleak Island)

Ironwood Trees are a new, highly AFK Woodcutting method introduced alongside Sailing (released November 19, 2025). They’re popular because you can chop for long stretches with minimal clicks and bank the logs just a few steps away once you build the island utilities. This guide covers the exact requirements, how to reach the island, what to build first, recommended gear, and realistic XP and profit expectations.

Requirements

  • 72 Sailing to access Sunble Bleak Island
  • 80 Woodcutting to chop Ironwood Trees
  • 70 Construction to build the bank chest (strongly recommended)

You can technically do the method without the bank chest by dropping logs, but banking is what makes the method feel effortless and adds steady GP over time.

Getting to Sunble Bleak Island

Step-by-step travel

  • Teleport to Deep Fin Point (commonly done with a sailor’s amulet).
  • From Deep Fin Point, take a boat and sail to Sunble Bleak Island.
  • Disembark and head to the buildable utility area.

Once you’ve set up the island, the loop becomes extremely simple: chop nearby Ironwood Trees, bank on the same screen, and return immediately.

Island Setup: What You Can Build (and What Matters Most)

When you arrive, you can build up to three utilities on the island:

  • Water pump
  • Cooking pot
  • Bank chest (priority)

The bank chest is the key to making Ironwoods feel “set-and-forget.” It removes the usual downtime you’d have with other AFK trees where you’re forced into longer bank runs or extra steps.

Bank chest materials

  • 70 Construction
  • 1 magic stone
  • 2 copper nickel bars
  • 2 adamant bars
  • 4 ironwood planks

Ironman note: if you don’t already have Ironwood planks, you may need to chop some logs first and convert them into planks before completing the chest. The chest is still worth prioritizing because it turns the method into a near-perfect AFK loop.

Recommended Gear and Inventory

Core gear

  • Best axe you can use (example: dragon axe)
  • Lumberjack outfit (if you have it)
  • Sailor’s amulet (or your preferred Deep Fin Point access)

Optional

  • Log basket (nice but not required)

A log basket can extend time between banks, but it’s not necessary because the bank chest is extremely close. If your goal is maximum AFK with minimal attention, the convenience of the chest is the real win.

Where to Chop: Tree Locations and the Best AFK Loop

Sunble Bleak Island has 14 Ironwood Trees spread around the area. For the smoothest experience, stay on the cluster closest to the bank chest. The idea is to minimize movement so you can bank and resume chopping immediately.

Simple routine

  • Click an Ironwood Tree and chop until it falls.
  • Move to the next nearby tree.
  • When your inventory is full, bank at the chest.
  • Repeat.

Because multiple trees are close together, you can rotate between them so that by the time you finish one, another is ready again. This rotation is what keeps the method consistent and low-effort.

How AFK Is It?

Ironwoods are popular because each tree can last a long time before it falls. As a reference point, an Ironwood Tree is commonly cited as falling after about 400 ticks, which works out to roughly 4 minutes of chopping before you need to interact again.

In practice, that means you often only need to click a few times per cycle: once to start chopping, and occasionally to swap trees or bank. If you’re looking for a method that’s easy to do while multitasking, this is one of the most relaxed Woodcutting options available at this level bracket.

XP Rates: What to Expect

XP depends heavily on your Woodcutting level, axe tier, and how attentive you are. At very high Woodcutting (including 99) using a dragon axe, players commonly see around ~75,000 Woodcutting XP per hour with a relaxed, truly AFK approach.

Why your XP might be lower (or higher)

  • Lower attention (standing idle after a tree falls) reduces hourly XP.
  • Lower Woodcutting level (closer to 80) generally reduces consistency and rate.
  • Better tools and boosts can push XP higher if you choose to optimize rather than fully AFK.

The main selling point of Ironwoods isn’t that they’re the absolute peak XP method; it’s that the XP is strong for how few clicks it takes.

Profit: How Much GP Do Ironwood Logs Make?

Ironwoods do generate profit, but it’s modest. A relaxed hour of chopping can produce a few hundred logs, translating into a small but steady GP gain. The method shines more as “paid training” rather than a dedicated money-maker.

How to improve value

  • Bank everything once you’ve built the chest (dropping logs removes the GP upside).
  • Consider processing logs into planks if you want to convert time into Construction progress (especially useful for accounts that value skilling materials).
  • Watch for future demand as new uses for Ironwood materials may increase long-term value.

If your goal is pure GP, other activities will beat this. If your goal is Woodcutting progress with minimal effort while still earning something, Ironwoods are excellent.

Ironwoods vs Redwoods: Which Should You Do?

Many players compare Ironwoods to Redwoods because both are known for being low-intensity. The key difference is banking friction. With Ironwoods, once the bank chest is built, banking is extremely close and fast, keeping downtime low and attention requirements minimal.

Choose Ironwoods if you want:

  • Very low click intensity (long chop times)
  • Quick banking with minimal running
  • Solid XP while staying relaxed

Choose Redwoods if you want:

  • A familiar, established method with its own consistent rhythm
  • To train in a more traditional high-level Woodcutting environment

Ironwoods are especially appealing from 80 Woodcutting onward if you want a smooth, AFK-heavy path while still collecting useful resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the bank chest to do Ironwood Trees?

No, but it’s strongly recommended. Without it, you’ll either drop logs or spend more time traveling, which defeats the method’s biggest advantage.

How many Ironwood Trees are on Sunble Bleak Island?

There are 14 Ironwood Trees. For best results, rotate between the trees closest to the bank chest.

What Woodcutting XP per hour can I expect?

At very high Woodcutting with a strong axe and a relaxed approach, around ~75k XP/hour is a common benchmark. Lower levels and more idle time will reduce that.

Is this method good for Ironman accounts?

Yes, especially if you want a low-effort way to stockpile logs for future skilling. Building the bank chest may require planning for planks and materials, but it pays off quickly.

Is it actually better than Redwoods?

It depends on what you value. Ironwoods are often preferred for the bank proximity and long AFK windows, while Redwoods remain a solid, established alternative.
