OSRS Update Breakdown: Move Sailing Boat Facilities, New Bank “Empty Containers” Button, and Wilderness Requirement Changes
Learn how facility bottles work, how the new bank button speeds up deposits, and what Wilderness diary requirements now gate key bosses and loot.
Overview
Sailing Gets a Huge QoL: You Can Move Boat Facilities Now
As Sailing progression unlocks more onboard options, the ability to rearrange your ship’s built-in facilities becomes more and more important. This update finally addresses a long-standing pain point: you can now move facilities to other suitable hotspots on your boat without removing them and losing the materials used to build them.
This is especially impactful for players who gathered their own resources (like Iron accounts) or anyone who invested significant gold into rare components and later realized their layout wasn’t optimal.
What changed?
You can now convert an installed facility into a portable stored object using a new item: facility bottles. Once bottled, the facility becomes an inventory item that can be placed onto another valid hotspot on your ship. The key benefit is that you keep the original build materials rather than tearing down and rebuilding.
How bottling a facility works
When interacting with a facility you’ll see options similar to:
- Remove (fully remove it)
- Replace (swap it for another facility)
- Bottle (store it into a facility bottle)
- Do nothing
Choosing Bottle consumes an empty facility bottle and produces a bottled facility item in your inventory. You can then use that bottled facility on another suitable hotspot to rebuild it instantly.
Important limitations to know
- Using a bottled facility gives no XP. It’s a relocation tool, not a training method.
- The bottle is consumed when you place the facility somewhere else.
- Empty bottles are tradeable, but bottles containing facilities are untradeable.
The tradeability rule prevents players from effectively “selling” pre-built facilities, while still letting the market supply empty bottles for people who want to reorganize their ships.
How to get facility bottles
Facility bottles come from specific salvaging activities rather than all salvage sources. The update calls out that they can be found in various shipwreck-related salvage types, including:
- Large pirate salvaging
- Mercenary salvaging
- Fremennik shipwreck salvaging
Practically, this means you may need to target particular salvaging spots (and potentially backtrack) if you want multiple bottles for a full layout overhaul. If you’re chasing collection log progress, this can be a convenient time to combine goals.
Bank UI Update: “Empty Containers” Button Is Here
After being polled and then taking far longer than expected to implement, the bank has received a UI refresh that makes room for a new high-impact feature: an Empty Containers button. The bank interface was already crowded, so the solution was a broader layout adjustment rather than simply adding one more icon to an already tight bar.
What the new bank layout does differently
The redesign focuses on clarity and usability:
- Several actions are now represented by icons/diagrams instead of older text labels (helpful for newer players).
- Quantity buttons (like 1/5/10/X) have been sized up, improving usability—particularly for mobile play.
- Key utility panels (like potion storage and Group Iron storage) sit in a more structured area and can be collapsed if needed.
Some elements have been shifted to reduce misclicks, including moving the bank tutorial button to a less intrusive position.
How “Empty Containers” works
When you click Empty Containers, the bank will automatically empty supported containers from your inventory directly into your bank—saving you from repeatedly right-clicking each item and selecting “empty.”
Containers mentioned as supported include:
- Essence pouches
- Coal bag
- Herb sack
- Meat pouch
- Log basket
- Reagent pouch
- Fish barrel
- Plank sack
- Fur pouch
- Looting bag
Key rule: locked inventory slots won’t be emptied
If you use bank “lock” functionality so an item doesn’t get deposited by “Deposit inventory,” that same protection applies here: a container in a locked slot will not have its contents emptied by the button. This prevents accidental emptying of items you intentionally keep on you for skilling loops.
Why this matters for efficiency
This change is a major time saver for any activity that relies on frequent banking with storage items—Herbiboar runs with herb sack, Blast Furnace or mining loops with coal bag, fishing trips with fish barrel, construction prep with plank sack, and so on. Over long sessions, fewer clicks translates directly into smoother gameplay and less downtime.
What’s still missing (for now)
The original poll question mentioned customizable toggles to control what gets emptied. Those configuration options are not included yet. The system may be revisited later once the team is confident it can be delivered safely and cleanly.
Special case: Shades of Mort’ton coffins
Coffins from the Shades of Mort’ton minigame now have a right-click Empty option while in the bank interface. However, they are intentionally excluded from the global Empty Containers button because many players prefer to keep shade remains inside the coffin rather than dumping them into the bank automatically.
The coffin’s empty option deposits as many remains as possible, limited by available bank space.
Other Notable Changes (Ironman, Wilderness, and More)
Devout boots can be dismantled back into holy sandals
Iron players who upgraded to devout boots previously had to regrind holy sandals if they later wanted to create holy molies. With this update, devout boots can now be dismantled back into holy sandals, allowing that upgrade path without repeating the entire grind.
There’s also a small UI polish note: the holy moly icon is now correctly centered in the worn equipment interface.
Wilderness diary requirements tightened for key content
Several Wilderness activities now require diary completion to access or profit from them, aimed at creating a fairer environment and reducing abuse from rule-breakers.
Key changes include:
- Entering the lairs of Callisto, Venenatis, and Vet’ion now requires the Medium Wilderness Diary.
- Entering the lairs of Artio, Spindel, and Calvar’ion now requires the Hard Wilderness Diary (up from Medium).
If you had an existing Slayer task for these bosses and can no longer do it due to the new requirement, you can speak to your Slayer master for a new assignment. Your task streak will not be reset.
Undead pirates: Iron loot eligibility updated
Irons can now receive loot from undead pirates even if another player has damaged them, but the loot is proportional to the damage dealt. The system rounds down, so single-item alch drops won’t appear, but stackable drops like runes, coins, or blighted supplies can still be awarded.
This helps in crowded areas where a stray hit previously could deny loot entirely.
Rogues’ Castle chest loot now gated by Medium diary
Chests at the Rogues’ Castle now provide no loot unless you’ve completed the Medium Wilderness Diary. Previously, loot scaled down without the diary, but it remained too rewarding for how accessible it was. You’ll still receive XP even if you’re not eligible for loot.
Small fixes and tweaks
- Gauntlet floor and tiles now render in the correct order.
- Rasolo’s building supply shop is now completely separate for irons and mains.
- Clan Wars odd skull pickup bug fixed for opposing teams after it’s dropped.
- Agility skill guide updated to include monkey bars in Yanille dungeon (57 Agility).
- Edgeville dungeon monkey bars (15 Agility) now show the correct icon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do facility bottles let me move a facility without losing materials?
Yes. Bottling stores the facility so you can place it elsewhere without rebuilding from scratch.
Are facility bottles tradeable?
Empty facility bottles are tradeable, but bottles containing a facility are untradeable.
Does placing a bottled facility give Sailing XP?
No. Rebuilding from a bottled facility consumes the bottle and awards no XP.
What containers does the bank “Empty Containers” button support?
It works with many common storage items like essence pouches, coal bag, herb sack, fish barrel, plank sack, and looting bag.
Why didn’t my container empty when I clicked the button?
If the container is in a locked inventory slot (so it won’t deposit), its contents won’t be emptied by the button.
